Heck, thats what we came here to do in the first place, right? But this right here, this is sensational. This is Chris Brosnahan. According to his Twitter bio, Chris is a 37-year-old writer, content marketing professional and occasional stand-up comedian. Chris caused quite the stir on Twitter yesterday when he revealed that he had applied for a copywriting job with a childrens publisher. Which would be pretty mundane except hes only gone and written in the style of an actual childrens story. How To Feel Comfortable When You Work From Home When you work from home, it can feel like youâre living your best life. Being your own boss, setting your own working hours, and being in control of your income can feel so freeing. But at the same time, it can be something that you can really struggle the balance. Donât be tempted to do the laundry in the day or chat to your neighbor over lunch. These are the distractions that could make working from home so much harder. Set Up Your Work Space Next, itâs going to help you to choose a set workspace. If you work from the couch, it may seem comfortable but it could be too comfortable. Then you will find that you just end up getting distracted and then no work is being done! Treat The Space Like An Office Then, look to treat that space like a proper office. Should You Pick A College Based on Earnings Potential As high school seniors across the United States fill out college applications, many will run a cost-benefit analysis of the cost of a school against the lifetime earnings potential of a degree from there. But that is not the only equation to consider. Georgetown Universityâs Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW) regularly calculates the value of college degrees â" which schools and areas of study offer the best potential return in the form of career earnings. The center recently released âRanking Your College: Where You Go and What You Make,â which listed schools by the average of what a graduate could make a decade after receiving a degree. Reuters asked CEW Director Anthony Carnevale to explain how future earnings potential should affect a studentâs college choice. Q: Is the school the most important factor when it comes to future earnings? A: Itâs not so much the college that matters, itâs what you take. What is most startling is the difference by field of study. If you go to college you will make, on average, $1 million more over your lifetime than someone who graduated from high school. But if you were someone with a degree in (energy based) engineering, you would get $5 million more. In the end, the way you decide is by using data on programs in conjunction with data on schools. In 80% of the cases, earning a bachelorâs degree or better is worth it. About 20% of the time, people with college degrees earn no more than people with high school degrees. That has more to do with field of study. Those who study arts and humanities, psychology, education ⦠tend to earn less. And thereâs a wide distribution of earnings over the years. Some graduates end up at the bottom of the earnings distribution. Q: Perhaps it is no surprise to see schools like Harvard University ($87,200) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ($91,600) at the top of the earnings potential list. But what about the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy ($89,000) and Massachusetts Maritime Academy ($79,500)? A: Curriculum affects earnings. Maritime academies are career-based institutions. They give strong occupational preparation and strong academics. And when you go to sea, you make a ton of money. Q: How big of an effect does receiving a graduate degree have on earnings potential? A: Itâs mostly positive. There are some of them that are dogs. Professional degrees are strongest over all. If you are an education major or psychology major, you really need to go to graduate school. A: What youâre talking about is an aggregate number. If you go to a school where the overall earnings potential is very low, it may be that the school has a very low graduation rate. Or it could be a school where very few have gone on to graduate school. There are some schools that have 50% education majors. They have very low earnings potential. Q: Does the data show what impact returning to school mid-career has on earnings potential and, if so, how much could that change someoneâs financial trajectory? A: For them, field of study is everything. Older students are very good at picking a field of study. They may go back and get a two-year degree. What they want is access to the labor market. They are very career oriented. They are much more focused.

2016 Cover Letter Trends - Work It Daily The Old Cover Letter: Microsoft published an interesting study in May documenting research on how our attention spans have changed over the past several years. In 2000 we had a 12-second attention spanâ"which dropped to a mere eight-second attention span by 2013. We now have a one-second-shorter attention span than that of a goldfish. Let that sink in for a minuteâ¦What influence does our ever-shrinking attention span ultimately have on our job searchesâ"and our cover letters? What are the repercussions? It means the cover letter as we know it traditionally is dead. Related: 11 Tips For Creating Compelling Cover Letters The Old Cover Letter: Makes up an entire page in length, is too long to fit on a mobile device screen without having to scroll, uses multiple paragraphs, and is text-dense. Has a lengthy introduction with 3-5 sentences on how they found out about the position, what they do, and their interest in the opportunity. It has a 2-3 paragraph body that elaborates on experience in the industry or position; may list a few experiences or accomplishments and the connection to why they want the opportunity or feel theyâre a great fit. Closes with reiterating why theyâre a good fit, restates interest, may share contact information or offer to follow up. The New Cover Letter â" Also Referred To As An E-Note, Power Note, Or Value Proposition Letter: 2016 Cover Letter Trend #1: The Shrinking Attention Span Not only have our shrinking attention spans changed the way we consume information, but our brains are changingâ"and itâs affecting more than just how we use our mobile devices or consume content online. Itâs changing the landscape of how we job search and demanding we communicate only the most vital information in the most concise way possible. Itâs creating a real dilemma for those who donât consider themselves to be professional writers, or who have a hard time writing about themselves, or who find it hard to spare everything but the details. So whatâs a job seeker to do? First and foremostâ¦forget the traditional cover letter as you know it. Consider it a part of the past, and letâs move on to better strategies for job searching. 2016 Cover Letter Trend #2: Easily Readable On Mobile Devices Cover lettersâ"which Iâll now refer to as e-notes, power notes, or value proposition lettersâ"must meet the demand of an increasingly mobile device-dependent audience. Your e-note, which is essentially the e-mail that your resume is attached to, should be short and fit on a single screen. Donât expect to be able to write an incredibly concise e-note with your first draft. Go through and write your first version, and then go back and edit. Aim to use fewer than 150 words so that the entire text will be optimized to fit on a mobile screen without any scrolling. 2016 Cover Letter Trend #3: Give Them Space When youâre writing your e-note be sure to incorporate plenty of white space. Using white space in your e-note will make the content more easily digestible by the reader. Consider the impact Twitter has had on our entire generation! Weâre forced to say what we want to say in 140 characters or lessâ"but the brilliance behind it is that Twitter had the foresight to know that their audienceâs attention span was short, and they wanted to accommodate it. Whether your audienceâs attention span is short, or theyâre just pressed for time, use Twitterâs 140-character limit as your guide and create shorter sentences. 2016 Cover Letter Trend #4: Engage Or Fascinate Your Reader When we teach job seekers how to write a Value Proposition Letter we advise them to always start with an interesting question or fascinating fact. For instance, my value proposition letter might start out by saying: Are you a busy CEO with no time to write your resume? Or it might say: Are you a time-pressed executive being vetted for an opportunity that requires a resume yesterday? Notice how Iâm targeting my audience? Busy CEOs and time-pressed executivesâ"while Iâm also addressing their problem; they need a resume NOWâ"and they donât have the time to do it themselves. Start your e-note, power note, or value proposition letter the same way. Speak to your audience, ask a question or state an engaging fact that relates to them and their most pressing need. You always want to speak to the need. 2016 Cover Letter Trend #5: Youâre The Answer Once youâve touched on the need or the problem they have, show them how youâre the answer! How are you the solution to your problem? For example you could use three short bullets with provable results: My clients enjoy results like these: In two weeks or less my clients are interviewing. Their resume response rate increases by 75%. 85% are employed in three months or less, obliterating the average job seekerâs search time by more than 50%. Then you could tie the problem and how youâre the solution into your brand and what you do: I work with busy top-level executives on tight deadlines to create interview-winning resumes within 3-5 business days. I could change the wording to accommodate my audience, the result I want to share, the problem I need to address, the space I have, or any number of other variables. The beauty is that itâs completely customizable. 2016 Cover Letter Trend #6: Follow A Formula Keep your e-note creation easy by following a formula. You wonât feel like youâre starting from scratch every time you write a new e-note, and before long youâll know the formula so well that writing by it will be easier and faster. Remember to keep each point short! Start with a question or engaging statement. Target the biggest need they have. State how youâre the solution. Prove it! Give them three bullets that prove youâre the solution. Donât forget the money. Employers want to know how you made it, saved it, or contributed to it. How does this fit into your brand? Call to action close. Edit â" Rememberâ¦150 words or fewer. 2016 Cover Letter Trend #7: Close With A Call To Action When we write value proposition letters for our clients we always end with a great call to action. Mine might say: Ready for results like these? Letâs chat! Yours could say: Ready to learn more? Or: Interested? Letâs talk! Call me at 1.800.991.5187. You can customize your call to action. However, remember that the idea is: you want them to take actionâ"whether that action is to call you, e-mail, check out your LinkedIn profile, or visit your web resume. You donât want it to stop with your e-note; you want them to be so compelled by what youâve said that they have to take a next step.
